The ED-2605C Muzzle Velocity Radar is a compact system with integrated Doppler processor for real time MV measurement for all gun applications: Field Artillery, Light Guns and Turrets, Anti-Aircraft guns, Naval guns, and others.

The unit comprises a Doppler Radar with integrated Digital Signal Processor with non-volatile data storage and serial or Ethernet data communications interface.

It is intended to be mounted permanently on the gun or weapon system, with connections to a fire control system and/or a data display terminal.

Its robust, sealed construction can endure extreme climatic and environmental conditions.

Purpose and Function


The trajectory of a projectile (and hence its proximity to the target) is strongly determined by the velocity of the projectile when it exits the gun barrel (the Muzzle Velocity, or “MV”).

Because MV can vary due to many factors, accurate knowledge of MV is essential to maximize the accuracy and effectiveness of gunfire。 It is currently accepted that inaccurate MV data is the largest contributor to error in ballistic calculations。 Direct measurement of MV improves the accuracy of artillery because the effects of barrel wear, temperature, ammunition age and temperature, etc。 can be compensated for。

Periodic gun and ammunition calibration involves considerable effort (and cost) and provides only a ‘snapshot’ of the MV of a gun and its ammunition.

The solution is to fit an MV Radar permanently to every gun to measure every round fired. The cost of an MV Radar is often less than the cost of ammunition for calibration firings. Now, every gun can continuously record MV’s and the data used directly in the fire control system ballistic calculations.

System Components


The ED–2605C MV Radar is a single module that integrates all of the following:

•Doppler radar

•FFT signal processor

•Non-volatile data storage

•Data communication interface

Radar Characteristics


Operates in the X-band and uses Doppler principles to measure Muzzle Velocity accurately.

Gun Jump Compensation


The ED-2605C compensates automatically for gun jump to provide highly accurate measurement results。

Radio Silence


Radar emissions are controlled. The system only radiates electromagnetic energy when the system is armed and the gun is firing.

Triggers


Acoustic and acceleration triggers are combined with a standard Doppler velocity trigger.

Processing


The integral digital FFT signal processor performs the real time Doppler measurement analysis.

The processor also receives commands from and sends results to the connected fire control system or data display terminal.

The system allows the pre-programming of the ammunition types and combinations of calibres and charges that are used. These settings are stored in non-volatile memory to allow firings to be performed without the need to reconfigure the settings.

Fire Control System Interface/Data Display Terminal Interface


The Radar Unit connects to a fire control system computer or data display terminal by means of RS- 422 or RS-232 serial data communications interface or an Ethernet interface.

Packaging & Mounting


•The ED-2605C system is a compact, robust, and completely solid-state electronics unit.

•Meets the environmental conditions of Land and Naval applications to MIL-STD-810.

•It can be permanently mounted on a gun on a custom-made bracket.

•A set of resilient shock mounts for the Radar is supplied as standard mounting accessories.

The system operates from a DC power source (10 - 36 V DC)

System Installation and Integration


The ED-2605C is designed for permanent gun mounting and connection to the gun fire control system for real time accurate muzzle velocity measurement for gun control。

The system is mounted on a custom bracket (details of bracket mounting to be decided with the gun manufacturer)。

A single cable provided the DC power and the data interface to the system. Cable installation is usually done by the gun system integrator during gun installation, but can also be retrofitted to existing gun systems.

The computer interface comprises a simple command set by which the fire control computer can control the radar unit and receive muzzle velocity measurements and statistics。 The command set for the fire control computer is defined in document E62-QS007 Interface Specification (available on request)。
